Watch Movies Online: Jet Li In Unleashed

One of Jet Li’s best movies to have been filmed in the English language, Unleashed, or as it’s known internationally, Danny the Dog, by French director Luis LeTerrier, and produced by the legendary Luc Beson of Leon and La Femme Nikita, is really a unique, one of a kind action flick, and a fascinating little gem released in the mid zero zeroes. It may not be remembered alongside There Will Be Blood as one of the greatest of the decade, but many who watch movies online consider it fondly.

The movie follows Danny, Danny the Dog, a young man who has been raised since childhood as an attack dog by Uncle Bart, a low rent loan shark and gangster, played to the sleaziest extremes by Bob Hoskins. Danny and Uncle Bart, interestingly, actually feel some love for one another. It’s not a healthy relationship, but there is some love there, and it adds a layer of complexity that lends a lot of depth to what could have been a typical action flick.

The movie revolves around a very clever gimmick: When Uncle Bart removes the dog collar around Danny’s neck, Danny goes nuts, beating the hell out of anyone in the room. Uncle Bart has trained him to respond in this psychological fashion as such to be a beast when uncollared, and a sweetheart when the collar is on. Throughout the course of the film, Danny’s objective is to learn how to think for himself as such that he doesn’t need the collar to behave civilly.

Danny escapes his boss and winds up in the home of a kindly old piano maintenance man played by none other than Morgan Freeman. Freeman and his daughter take it upon themselves to teach Danny what love and family are really all about, far different from the kind of family Danny had with his Uncle Bart.

There is a lot of familiar territory here, it’s an old story: A dog runs from a cruel family and winds up in the home of a kind family. However, by replacing the dog with a young man, producer Luc Besson has stumbled upon a very clever twist. This lends a lot of extra mileage to a story that could feel stale and tired in a less talented story teller’s hands.

The action in the film really sets it apart. Jet Li doesn’t just do normal kung fu in this movie, rather, he fights like a rabid dog, throwing loose punches, pulling hair, scratching, biting and so on. It’s incredible to watch him work on this brand new martial art style. It wouldn’t really be all that effective in a real life fight, but that’s kind of the point, using the action to develop the character of Danny the Dog, as opposed to just using it as filler in a fight flick.

The end result is, of course… Jet Li beats up the badguys, they live happily ever after. That’s how these sort of brawler movies always end, but, the emotional content of the film goes quite a bit deeper than that and gives a lot more than the typical, standard punch-out kung fu flick. It’s really a unique little gem.

So if you haven’t seen it yet, give it a viewing. It’s certainly one of Jet Li’s best movies to be given a wide release in the US.
