The film was based on the comic of the same name by English comics legend Alan Moore, who used the story as a commentary on American superhero comic books. Many of the comic’s readers were actually against the adaptation, considering it impossible to turn into a comic book. Zack Snyder really surprised many of them, though, taking a story that was very comic book focused and turning it into a story focused on the concept of superheroes in film. The end result is without a doubt one of the most interesting superhero flicks ever made.
The interesting thing about these heroes is that they’re not purely heroes. They’re incredibly morally complex, and none of them always do the right thing. The Comedian is barely a hero at all, but rather, something of a sociopath who’s been reined in by the government and used for the power of good, more or less. Rorschach is the purest of the heroes, very moralistic, but also suffering something of an addiction to violence.
The story is just as morally complex as its characters. After the finale, you’ll find yourself wondering who was really in the right, whether or not Ozamandius’ plan to save the world was truly justified, and whether or not his victory will be very long lived. While Alan Moore himself refuses to see the adaptation, it is, nevertheless, a worthwhile attempt to translate his story to film.
Zack Snyder is an interesting director, taking these massive, big budget films like Dawn of the Dead, Frank Miller’s 300 and The Watchmen and turning them into something much more personal than you’d expect from your usual blockbuster films. With Dawn of the Dead, Snyder knew he couldn’t top the scariness of the original, so he simply made a great action flick. With 300, he did great justice to the epic battle scenes of the comic, and with Watchmen, he created a surprisingly personal film out of a flick with a dozen superheroes.
Snyder’s capabilities to turn huge budget films into personal flicks is really interesting and shows the independent spirit even with seventy million dollar budgets.
Watchmen is definitely one to watch, especially if you’re just plain sick and tired of the tights and capes genre, because the film works as such a commentary on these stories that it will satisfy those who love’em and those who are getting bored of them.
