Miss Agatha Christie’s The Big Four With Hercule Poirot
Agatha Christie is well known and loved as the original queen of the crime novel. Her books were all written in the first half of the twentieth century and yet they remain forever popular all around the world in many different languages. Her two best loved crime fighting characters are Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot. Agatha Christie the Big Four with Hercule Poirot is the central character in this book, and it lives up to all Christie fans’ expectations.
This book is quite different from other Agatha Christie novels because it is a book in four parts instead of being one single story about a crime. This book was published in 1927 after parts of it were serialized in Sketch Magazine.
The book kicks off with the inimitable Hercule Poirot preparing himself for a lucrative trip to the United States at the behest of a wealthy American. Captain Hastings, one of Poirot’s offsiders drops in and Poirot begins by asking him if he knows something of “the big four”.
While preparations for Poirot’s lucrative trip continue, they are interrupted by a visitor who comes in and tells them what he knows of the “big four”. He tells the pair that one of the four is a French femme fatale, another is an American who is symbolized by a dollar sign, another is a Chinese mastermind Fu Man Chu type character and the final member of the gang is known as the mysterious “destroyer”. When the pair leave the house and then return they find the mysterious visitor dead.
The books takes the reader on the classic Christie roller coaster of plot twists and turns. It also features a cameo by Poirot’s twin brother before the story resolves itself in a manner entirely satisfying to the reader.
