Whale Watching: Experience The City Of Victoria From The Water!

Victoria BC whale watching is the signature experience of a trip to the island city. With such a rare opportunity at hand, visitors would be remiss not to take advantage of this one-in-a-lifetime experience. Whale watching is a truly magical experience as there is nothing like seeing the huge, majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Not only that, but also you get a fun excursion out on a boat and the chance to enjoy the ocean and marine scenery.

April through October are the best months for sightings of resident orcas. The Victoria whale watching tours run twice a day (9am and 1pm) and are three hours in duration. You can choose to go on your whale watching adventure in either a zodiac or in of the big, covered boats. The zodiacs manoeuvre easily on the water as the wind whips through your hair, and the covered boats have heated indoor seating, an on board washroom, and a liquor license. Some of the covered boats also have top decks, where approximately 40 passengers can observe whales and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.

The areas the Orca Spirit’s vessels travel in, the Juan de Fuca Strait and the Haro Strait, have three pods of resident orca, which are known as the J, K, and L pods. The three pods total about 100 individual whales. This high number of whales means that in the peak months, you are almost guaranteed a sighting with the success rate being about 95%.

On your whale watching tour, you are likely to see marine life of other kinds as well, such as bald eagles, cormorants, and other oceanic birds, otters, seals, porpoise, and other types of whales, including Gray, Minke, and Humpback.

Orca Spirit also offers some special/custom group packages: dinner cruises, custom charters, and a combined whale watching – Butchart Gardens excursion where you go whale watching, tour the Gulf Islands, and have the unique chance to access the Gardens by water. It is recommended highly that you stay for dinner and/or the evening fireworks at Butchart Gardens as well. A tour like this is sure to be the highlight of your trip to Victoria!
