Basic Categorization Of Plumbing Valves
Valves in pipe lines are provided to control supply of water. They are used to stop supply when any repair is carried in pipe line. Valves are devices that control the flow of fluids and gases. Some are used to regulate the rate of flow, and others are used to stop it completely to prevent flooding or allow repairs to be made.
There are dozens of different types of valves, and each performs a specific task. But there are many other valves used in the typical residence.
Compression valves: this type of valve is most commonly used in the two- handle faucet. Compression valve consists of basically two valves that work in conjunction. One valve is used to control the flow of cold water, whereas the other valve controls the flow of hot water. When turned, each valve handle compresses against rubber washers, which in turn regulates the flow of water which passes through the valve.
When a compression type stem springs a leak it is usually because its washer, located at the tip, has worn out, allowing water to seep between it and the faucet’s seat.
Cartridge valve: Unlike compression valves, these are washer less and are operated by a single handle. One can locate them on the faucet body. When the handle of the valve is lifted, the valve’s stem raises thereby, aligning the holes with the cartridge. To mix the hot and cold water, you just need to twist the handle. Corroded washers generally cause leaks in the valve.
Next are the disk valves and are also washers less. They are used mostly in single-handle kitchen sink faucets, and are identified by the cylinder located inside the faucet. The inlet hoses of the plumbing system allow hot and cold water to pass through the valves, while the outlet hole directs the water to pass through the valve spout.
Ball valve is an automatic flow control device. Regulating principle is the level of some free water surface. Ball valves basically consist of one handle under which a cylindrical cap is located. As the valve handle is turned to open the valve, the ball rotates to a point where part or the entire hole through the ball is in line with the valve body inlet and outlet, allowing fluid to flow through the valve.
Over time, persistent water leaks can result in an increased water bill and can even cut a channel into the surface of a sink or bathtub. Thankfully, repairing water valve is a relatively easy task which can be performed quickly.
