Making Up Your Own BBQ Sauce Recipes
No one is actually crazy enough to give up their BBQ sauce recipes, but that does not mean you can not take some well-known information and basic know-how to make your own tasty BBQ sauce. Depending on where you live, the type of barbecue that is common in your area may be a certain type. Mainly the bases for your regional BBQ may be certain items. For instance, the Carolinas mostly use sauces that are vinegar and mustard based, whereas Texas-style barbecue starts with a tomato base.
It is obviously not a requirement that you use the popular ingredients for BBQ sauce recipes in your area, but it is good to know so that you can pinpoint the bases that you like and use them in your own delicious sauce.
The sauces that are often found at grocery stores are usually lack-luster and do not have the same punch that the ones made at home do. While it would be nice to say that it is because they are mass-produced, the bulk of it is because the sauce-making companies can not cater to every region of the country. On top of that fact there are just some flavors that seem to be popular all over the country. That being said, don’t let store-bought BBQ flavors entice or confuse you: real barbecue is made a certain way and if you want to be able to cook up a sauce that is truly delectable, you are going to have to really dive into the world of barbeque.
You will find that most sauces are mustard, vinegar, or tomato based. It is fairly easy to determine which type is the kind you have grown to love over the years considering the extremely varied tastes between the three bases. Those that are based with vinegar tend to be more sour, and the ones that are based with mustard are usually fairly tangy. Sauces that use tomato as a base are often thicker than the other two and can be used to host a whole array of flavors at once.
Besides the bases are, of course, the other seasonings. Some of the most common seasonings are: onion, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, cayenne, salt, pepper, bourbon, molasses, various tangy fruits, and more. While this is a large list, choose some of those and more to find the perfect taste. Depending on where you are from and sauces that you grew up with, you could like certain flavors that are very much different from what people in another area would.
