The story follows officer Murphy, a beat cop in Delta City, the new Detroit. At this point, the city has gone bankrupt and been bought out by huge corporations who pretty much own everything, including the police. The film takes a lot of influence from the cyberpunk literary movement as well as films like Blade Runner. The movie is a raw and relentless spoof on the modern culture of the times from television to the corporate culture and everything in between.

Murphy is killed before long, of course, and transformed into his reborn form of Robocop, the new thing in crime fighting. This whole subplot is one of the movie’s funniest points, with the people of Omni-Corp really regarding him much as a new piece of technology, barely even as a fellow human.

While Murphy is alive under all that plastic and steel, while he is still human after all, the people at Omni-corp could really care less. To them, he’s no more human than the new Porsche, the new Apple computer. He’s treated as if he’s nothing more than a corporate product, a prototype being put out in hopes of landing a big contract with the police force.

The reborn Robocop must struggle to get in touch with his humanity once more, and, eventually, to destroy the people who killed him in the first place. The story of revenge is later complicated and at the same time made less complicated when Robocop is taking the fight to the front door of characters that the audience should hate, but that Robocop shouldn’t. This is a fascinating, existential element of the film, in that we read more emotions into Robocop’s actions than are actually there.

The film was really meant to be a spoof of action flicks in general. The writers had commented that it had gotten to such a zany extreme that, while John Wayne might only shoot two or three guys over the course of a film, Dirty Harry would have to shoot at least twenty three people just to get to his hot dog stand and back on his lunch break. So this film is defined by that excess.

The end result is a film that is both a hilarious spoof of these extreme action films, and a great example thereof. It works on every level from satire to drama to action film, and never disappoints.

This is what makes the movie more or less perfect. Not many films can actually give the audience exactly what they want, nothing more, nothing less, quite as well as Robocop.
