Remember The Life And Works Of The King Of Pop With Your Own Michael Jackson Poster

The world of music lost the king of pop barely a year ago and the overwhelming reaction to his death with testament to the huge impact he had on popular culture, not just in the United States, but worldwide. Die hard Jackson fans have maintained a near-constant vigil outside his famous Neverland ranch ever since the news of his passing broke, while others pay tribute in their own way with a variety of commemorative merchandise and products, such as the ubiquitous Michael Jackson poster. This article looks back on the life of a pop icon and assesses his impact.

Jackson was born into a large family, the eighth of ten children in 1958. His father was a hard taskmaster and much of his early life was marked by incredibly intense pressure and parental expectation.

Jackson has credited his harsh upbringing, however, as driving his later success, and The Jackson 5, a group formed with four of his siblings, certainly demonstrated his talent and self-discipline from the off. Signed to the famous Motown label, the group scored several top 40 hits before leaving for Epic Records, all prior to Jackson’s twentieth birthday.

The Jackson 5 would later rename themselves the Jackson’s and continued to have strong successes, but in 1978 Michael was to meet Quincy Jones, who arranged to produce his debut LP ‘Off the Wall’. This marked the start of a career, independent of the Jackson 5, which was unparalleled in US pop history, save, perhaps, for that of a certain Elvis Presley.

Off the Wall would go on to sell over 20 million copies worldwide, spawning such hits as ‘Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough’ and ‘Rock With You’. Thriller was to follow, and this is perhaps the record for which he will be best remembered. Anyone who grew up in the 1980′s will testify to the fact that tracks like ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Something’ were infectious and inescapable, cutting across genres and tastes to provides hits that seemed beamed from another dimension.

Jackson followed the success of Thriller with Bad, which also produced numerous global hits. Although his personal life and appearance were gaining huge amounts of tabloid attention, distracting from his music, Jackson continued to produce groundbreaking material, with Dangerous and History exploring new territory and his videos and dance moves continuing to attract critical acclaim.

Although it is rarely talked about, Jackson was a keen philanthropist and environmental causes champion. A strict vegetarian, Jackson spoke out for the protection of animals and the natural world and he increasingly incorporated his belief in a better world as a central theme of his songs.

Although 2001′s Invincible was to be Jackson’s last record, and we will never know the exact nature of his planned ‘This Is It’ farewell shows, Jackson has left the world of pop with a remarkable legacy. He produced world class hits and redefined the nature of what it is to be a pop star. If he battled with his own private demons, we must still be thankful for the public genius he left us.
